“D.O. Emporda covers roughly 2,000 hectares of vineyards in Alt and Baix Emporda. There are 330
growers and 50 wineries registered with the Regulatory Council. About 55,000 hectoliters of wine are
produced under the DO, with annual sales representing 5.5 million bottles per year” Patronat de
Vines have been cultivated here since the arrival of the Greeks on the coast at Empúries in the sixth
century BC. The Romans arrived later, expanding and building upon the Empúries and beginning the
exportation of their wines throughout the empire. Later, in medieval times, the monasteries continued
the wine-growing tradition, including that of the beautiful Sant Pere de Rodes perched high above the
sea near Cadaques.
The 1760s was the golden age of viticulture for the area; which continued on for another century.
Evidence of this richness can be found in the extensive network of terraces and dry stone walls that
continue to indent the steep hillsides and plains.
Unfortunately in the 1870s , phylloxera arrived from southern France and destroyed these northern
Catalan vineyards, as well as much of the Iberian peninsula. It was a disaster from which (at least in
terms of quantity) the Empordà has yet to recover.
Thanks to young winemakers, the wines of this historic region are bustling with life and Mediterranean
character. There are a great variety of wines many of which are indigenous to the area. Numerous small
wineries are striving for excellence in organic, ecological and biodynamic wines.
A speciality is the Garnatxa de l´Emporda, a naturally sweet wine produced from the Garnacha grape.
Mature, warm and smooth — making it an exceptional dessert wine, together with the area's own sweet
wine, the Moscatell de l’Empordà.
If you are a complete novice or a wine expert, you will enjoy the journey.
